Alternatives to Coffee & Tea

This summer is a milestone season for us.  It is the first time we have attempted to wean ourselves off commercially prepared coffee and teas.  For me,  coffee has not been an issue.  I have, at least twice each year, gone “cold turkey.”  Whenever my coffee consumption reaches five or more cups on a daily basis, it is time to give up the addiction.  The withdrawal can be a bit troublesome, at first, but it is worth the effort to feel “clean” and invigorated.  For my wife, giving up coffee completely has not worked well.

However, she has adapted to tea alternatives eagerly.  By far, her favourite has been rose hip & ginger tea.

We dry all our wild harvest plants using screens, wind and sun.  The exceptions are late season harvests, like hawthorne berries, blueberries and mountain ash, which we dry using a dehydrator.

Rose hip & ginger is prepared, after drying, by using a small chopper, and mixing one piece of crystallized ginger with a half cup of rose hips.  The result is pleasant-tasting, and excellent for blood or kidney issues. Hawthorne tea is prepared the same way.

Some of the other teas that we have harvested and consumed this summer are raspberry/strawberry leaf combinations, goldenrod tea (using the flowers & leaves), wild mint teas,  cranberry, saskatoon,  seneca,  spruce bud (a lemony taste), birch bark (bitter, like tonic water),  wild sorrel, tansy (caution: toxic in large quantities), fennel, yarrow and even sagebush flowers.

Coffee substitutes are more challenging.  Do not believe people that tell you that dandelion root is just like coffee.  It isn’t, and if they had actually prepared it, they wouldn’t claim it was.  It has a bitter, almost harsh aftertaste that doesn’t remind anyone of coffee.  However, it may very well keep you awake!

Dandelion root can be prepared in such a manner, though, that it tastes acceptably good, if unlike coffee.  First, wash and dry the root.  Then, cook it in a solar oven or high above campfire heat for a couple of hours, at no more than 300 F.  Crush the root well.  Steeping it, rather than boiling it, seems to eliminate a lot of the bitterness.

For flavour, use hazelnuts, roasted and crushed, or even acorns. Both impart a slightly darker flavour.  To provide a good thickening agent, boil & strain common plantain seeds or cattail root fibers, and mix in with the drink.  It doesn’t taste unlike a sharp=tasting cream, but certainly doesn’t have the  sweet taste.  Cattail root, on its own, is more mellow.

A second coffee alternative is  thistle root (young, not old and sinewy) mixed with  goldenrod flowers.  It has more of the taste of a bitter tonic than coffee, but it is good hot, and good for you!

Don’t expect, regardless of the tea or coffee substitutes that you use, to generate any taste like that of commercial product.  The only thing that actually tastes like coffee is coffee, just like the only thing that tastes like meat is meat, contrary to the claims of shitake mushroom growers or tofu lovers.  If you need exact flavours, use exact product!  Otherwise, enjoy the alternative lifestyle of the coffee or tea  imitator.

Alternatives To Dry Cleaning

When it comes to which common commercial cleaning product produces the most household toxins (and the nastiest), it’s hard to work out whether the prize (or anti-prize) goes to the artificial musks and other scented stuff used in air fresheners or whether it should go to dry cleaning fluid. And when you think that soft toys and the like are held close to children’s faces overnight (not to mention all those other fabric worn or kept near the face), this is positively scary. What is that horrible chemical compound (perchloroethylene, also known as perc) doing to you?

Some British dry cleaning providers have cottoned onto this and are starting to offer “greener” alternatives for cleaning laundry. This method uses a silicone based product that is gentler on the environment and on you, although it’s not 100% ideal.

So what do you do with those delicates to clean them without ruining them? How do you clean soft toys?

The short answer is: handwashing. Let’s face it: people have worn and washed silk for centuries before some scientist came up with perc in the laboratory. And if the stuff disintegrated at the first touch of water, we wouldn’t have worn it, any more than we wear fabric made from spider’s webs (however, given that spider webs are tougher than high-tensile steel weight for weight, maybe some enterprising scientist ought to find some way to them into a natural alternative to Kevlar).

It gets even better with woollen garments. These can be washed in warm or cool water in a machine on the delicate cycle (slow spin, short wash) and dried flat by the sun and air rather than in a dryer.

But handwashing is by far the best method. And for cleaning soft toys, the method is so easy on skin and easy full stop that small children can do it.

How do you set about cleaning clothes by handwashing? Simple.

First, take a bowl or bucket of warm water – it should be the temperature of a comfortable bath. However, if anything you are washing has bloodstains or other stains from protein (egg, semen, etc), then wash the item in cold water. Next, get a bar of soap. Any ordinary soap that you use for washing hands will do. Swirl the soap around in the water until the water goes slightly cloudy. Alternatively, make some soap gel and put about a cup full into the water.

Now you can put the items to be washed in. If any of the items is not colourfast – jewel coloured sari fabrics often are not – then wash these separately. In the case of sari fabrics with bands of contrasting colour, you may need to spread out the garment flat and spot treat it so the different coloured dyes don’t bleed into each other much. Or else just spot-clean the fabric. But colourfast things can all go into the bucket together. Swirl the items around a few times, and dunk them up and down. Don’t be too vigorous – treat the delicates with care.
Give each item a bit of separate attention. Lift each one up, check it for any visible dirt and work it up to a good lather in your hands. Scrunch the foamy item around a few times in your hands – don’t wring or rub it too much.

Now comes the rinsing. Tip the soapy water out, then gently squeeze each item to get the worst of the water out. Refill the bowl or bucket with fresh water – either cool or warm. Swirl everything around and watch the water go cloudy with soap. Then repeat this process for a second rinse.

Those wanting to live more sustainably will do to bear in mind that the soapy water from the washing stage of the cycle can be thrown over the roses to deter aphids. The water from the rinsing can be used to water the garden.

Lastly, squeeze each item out and put them to dry. In the case of underwear, they can hang on the line. Woollens should be dried flat. And soft toys, as they take ages to dry, can be put through the spin cycle of the machine without any harm to get the worst of the water out.

Find Snack Alternatives to Chocolate

Chocolate is the magic word for kids. You name it and you can make them do their lessons, complete all their assignments; clean their rooms and what not. Why just kids, even young adults and grown ups share the same kind of passion for chocolates. Chocolates are not called sinful just like that. You may feel tempted to have more and more of it but you cannot help yourself from feeling guilty of the calorie count. The sugar and fat content in chocolates is extremely high and therefore it is not a good idea to have them if you are looking forward to shed some weight.

Since kids are not much aware of the effects of chocolate on their health, it is necessary for their parents and teachers to educate them in this regard. Obviously you cannot stop a child from having chocolates but there needs to be a limit to it. Obesity is now common in kids. The main reason behind this is the consumption of fried foods, chocolates and candies and a lack of exercise. Kids these days are becoming more and more prone to a sedentary lifestyle where computer games have replaced any kind of physical activity.

The high sugar content in chocolates has an adverse effect on the sugar level in the body. This may lead to the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes coupled with obesity is not something that you want for your child. Therefore it is necessary to raise awareness about healthy fundraising solutions.

The health statistics in the United States of America project a dismal picture as far as kids are concerned. As many as 30% of the children in the country, who were born after 2000, have a high risk of developing diabetes. There has been a conscious effort from the state health departments and schools to encourage healthy fundraisers. This is apparent from the implementation of laws like California SB 12 and similar health laws in other states. As a result chocolate fundraising was banned by numerous schools in the past.

The food served in these events would incorporate healthy fundraising alternatives, an assortment of delectable snacks that would taste equally delicious but go easy on the calorie count. They are no less tasty and the kids would definitely love them.

Healthy snack alternatives have 35% less fat, 25% less sugar and 10% less saturated fats. As a result parents need not bother about what their child is eating in fundraisers that go for healthy snacking options. In fact, the children consume 250 calories less than what they would have done otherwise. They comply with the nutritional guidelines set by the health departments of various states.

Healthy snacks are a great alternative to chocolates and they go a long way in reducing the risk of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes in kids. When you opt for these healthy snacks, you are sure to get a satisfactory blend of taste and health.

Alec Moreland promotes wellness, nutrition and healthy snacks in fundraising to reduce obesity and Type 2 Diabetes in schools. “America’s #1 Healthy Snack Fundraiser” is The Chocolate Alternative.

Holistic Alternatives For Pets

You may ask, what does the term ‘holistic’ mean? The word holistic is derived from the word ‘whole’. Holistic veterinary medicine, therefore, refers to the treatment of the whole organism rather than the treatment of individual body parts or simply the removal of symptoms. For example, if a cat is diagnosed by the veterinarian with a urinary tract infection, the veterinarian may prescribe pharmaceutical medication to treat the cat. Where the holistic veterinarian may provide advice on improving the cat’s overall health through the use of holistic methods in addition to, or instead of, antibiotics to treat the urinary tract infection. Thus, the cat’s overall well being is being addressed and improved rather than just the ailment that the cat has acquired.

Under the heading of holistic veterinary medicine are many modalities including acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, herbs, supplements, and flower essences, energy healing modalities such as Reiki, magnetic therapy and nutrition.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method used to treat blockages in the energy lines, known as meridians, running through the body. With the use of needles being inserted in specific acupuncture points, blockages in the energy lines will be eliminated and the body will return to an energetically balanced state. Some of the benefits of acupuncture include pain relief, increased blood flow to the area being treated and decreased inflammation. Acupuncture can be a viable alternative to using pain killers and steroids. Conditions that can benefit from the use of acupuncture in animals include hip dysplasia, arthritis, and nerve damage, controlling nausea and vomiting. In addition, acupuncture can be used to help relieve the side effects associated with chemotherapy and radiation. There are few, if any, side effects when done correctly.

Homeopathy has been around since the mid-1800’s and, as practiced today, is credited to Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a German medical doctor. The principle behind homeopathy is that ‘like cures like’. That is to say that a very diluted form of a substance is used to treat a condition or group of symptoms which, if used in its full strength, would cause the same set of symptoms in an animal. Thus, the homeopathic practitioner must carefully match the animal’s symptoms with the appropriate remedy.

Chiropractic therapy is based on the manual manipulation of the spine to improve health. Spinal manipulation is almost as old as acupuncture which was used by the Chinese from about 2700 B.C. Hippocrates used spinal manipulation on humans because he believed that alignment problems with the spine were the cause of many diseases. Chiropractic care in general focuses on the interaction between the nervous system and the biomechanics of the vertebrae. Since all of the body’s systems are regulated by the nervous system, anything that causes interference between the nervous system and any of the body’s systems can adversely impact those areas. Therefore, when seeking chiropractic therapy for your pet, ensure that the veterinarian or chiropractor you choose uses techniques approved specifically for animals.

Herbs have been used around the world for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. This includes Western herbs from North America, Aryuveic herbs from India and traditional Chinese herbs. Herbs are effective in treating many conditions that pets have. Conditions that have been effectively treated with herbs include liver and kidney diseases. Herbs can also support the immune system by assisting the full recovery of the pet while other herbs serve as detoxification agents, antioxidants and anti-cancer therapies. Only well-known and respected herbal companies should be considered when purchasing herbal products for your pets.

Supplements can help to strengthen the body and improve immune system function.
To ensure that your pets are receiving health and nutritional supplements that are of the highest quality, ask your veterinarian if their products carry the Natural Animal Supplement Council’s (NASC) seal on the label. Products that have the NASC seal on them provides you with the assurance that the company adheres to the standards set forth for animal health and nutritional supplements by the NASC, has regular quality control checks and has an adverse event reporting system.

Flower essences can be used to modify the behavior of animals that are exhibiting aggression, fear or behavioral problems. Bach Flower’s Rescue Remedy is a flower essence combination that is used commonly to calm scared or anxious animals. It can be sprayed in the exam room of a vet’s office, sprayed directly on the pet’s body (not in the eyes) or put in the pet’s water. The choice of remedies for other behavioral challenges should be based on the individual pet’s needs. Oversimplification by using a particular flower essence for a particular problem is much less effective than evaluating your pet’s overall condition and formulating a remedy of various flower essences.

Energy healing therapies have existed for thousands of years and are practiced throughout the world by many cultures. Some of the more familiar forms of energy healing therapies include Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and Quantum Touch. These healing practices involve a practitioner who serves as a conduit for the Universal energy to clear imbalances that exist within an animal’s energy field. Energy healing is very useful in calming a nervous or distressed animal, but can also be beneficial for any animal regardless of their health.

Magnetic therapy can be used when a pet is experiencing joint challenges that affect their mobility. Many animals sleep on magnetic pet pads that have specially placed magnets embedded within them and have shown increased mobility after laying on them.

Natural foods are recommended in order for a pet to live a healthy and happy life. Many commercial pet foods contain by-products and chemicals that are known to have serious side effects. Chemicals to avoid include BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin as well as any artificial coloring and flavoring. Foods that are good to feed your pets include natural whole grains (e.g. brown rice, organic vegetables and meats such as chicken, beef or rabbit. Of course if your pet is allergic to any of these types of foods then don’t include them in their diet.

Thankfully, holistic alternatives are more readily available for pets than in the recent past and their use is growing in popularity among many veterinarians. They can be used as complimentary therapies in conjunction with your pet’s regular veterinary care. For example, if your pet has a broken leg your veterinarian would need to do surgery to repair the break. In addition, a holistic therapy could also be used to help speed the healing process and decrease the amount of pain and inflammation that would accompany a broken leg. This is how traditional veterinary care and holistic veterinary medicine are used to complement one another to the benefit of an animal’s health.

The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association’s web site is a great resource to locate a veterinarian in your area that is certified in holistic modalities. I would recommend seeking holistic alternatives for your pets in addition to any traditional treatments that are available.

Disclaimer: Holistic alternatives can be used as complementary therapies in conjunction with your pet’s regular veterinary care. Always consult a veterinarian for any concerns regarding your animal companion’s well being.

Alternatives For Plastic Bags

If we take close look, plastic (shopping) bags really have a damaging effect on these environmental systems. Plastic is non-biodegradable, toxic and not recyclable in many sense of the word. Nowadays people feel more and more the need for an attempt to seek alternatives in eliminating the use of plastic and reducing plastic waste. These plastic bags are not bio-degradable and they affect the environmental balance in various ways. This situation foster the individual practice for sustainable earth and a friendly environment.

Some shoppers sometimes bring various items wrapped in plastic bags and throw them away after use without any concern for the environment. This caused damage to earth life. Plastic bags pose a threat to marine life too, because, if ingested, the bags can block the animal stomach and cause starvation. For example, sea turtles were reported mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. How can it be plastic bags present in the bellies of wild animals. In a news it was reported that a whale that washed up on a beach at Normandy was found to have 800 grams of plastic and other packaging in its stomach! Studies said that several plastic products contain bisphenol which is dangerous for our health.

Stray plastic bags can also clog sewer pipes, leading to stagnant water and unmistakably associated health hazards. In 2002, Bangladesh banned plastic bags after drains blocked by bags contributed to widespread monsoon flooding in 1988 and 1998. Even in province of Himachal Pradesh (India) there is a strict plastic bag regulations, where people caught with plastic bags are fined $ 2000.

Hence, it is a good things to do if we use minimal plastic (shopping) bags, or using them repeatedly for an optimum period. Another suggestion is making alternative bags, made of reeds, cloth, paper, or other media that we can use repeatedly. With some creativity, we can recycle some old things to make new (shopping) bags too. It is good to be creative while at the same time we save our life and others. I think we need alternatives for plastic products, healthy alternatives for our health and our earth.

Home Office Flexible Alternatives

Having a home office, even if you do not work from home, can be an organized way of taking care of financials, keeping all paperwork in an easy to find file cabinet, and having everything you need in one place. Of course if you do work from home, then you have learned early on that defining some kind of space in your apartment or house for your office is critical to being productive. Working away from the desk though, is also an option as flexibility is key to staying motivated. Similarly, if you do not have the space to designate a home office, consider these alternatives.

If you primarily work with your laptop, you know the benefits of being able to work wherever you want. At home, you sometimes sit in front of the TV when working or doing mundane tasks that do not require much concentration. Sitting on the couch and looking down at your laptop creates stress on your neck and back. Consider a laptop tray table, which is similar to a TV tray table, but goes further as it can be adjusted on a slant or a flat tabletop surface. It can also be adjusted for height. This is a great way to improve your posture as it eliminates the slouching that you so often do without being aware of it.

When you set up a home office, you usually set everything up (such as the computer, the printer, the telephone) near each other with your desk being the primary focal point. However, if you like to alternate where in your apartment or house you work, remote capabilities are a must. A laptop with wireless internet is a start as is a cordless phone. Now you can work in the kitchen while keeping a close eye on that pasta sauce you are making for dinner. That’s multi-tasking, something we are all subject to in today’s busy way of life. Should you need to print something out that you would rather do now instead of having to connect your printer to your laptop later, you could get a wireless network printer. Working flexibly at home and multi-tasking have now never been easier and more enjoyable.

Ear pieces or bluetooth headsets are not just for driving. They are ideal for taking quick calls that will not slow you down as you are working. With a headset, you need not be afraid to answer your cell phone and can confidently continue filing or whatever other tasks you can handle without too much concentration while talking on the phone. It will also prevent you from getting a neck ache.

Having flexible work options will fuel your motivation to be creative and productive. No one can sit in the same spot all the time without boredom setting in. Plus you will feel constrained and not able to get anything else done. It is good to change it up every now and then. And if you do not have the space for a home office, then these alternatives are just what you need.

Hidden Spy Camera Alternatives

Today, a number of hidden camera devices are available in all shapes and forms, as mentioned in previous articles we have glorified the spy pen for its amazing versatility and how it can be used in all sorts of situations. Despite our praise of this device we have to admit that it’s not always the best-hidden spy camera for the job. So here is a quick run down on some of the alternative spy camera products on the market today.

Spy Glasses/Sunglasses

This is the device that began the whole hidden spy camera craze; depicted in movies they allowed someone else to watch what someone else was seeing. Originally a micro camera was hidden within the nosepiece that connected the lenses together. The main reason these nifty little gadgets never really seemed to take off however was the sheer size of the camera embedded within the frame. It just made them to bulky to be discreet. An answer was soon found in the form of sunglasses; their design allowed much thicker rims without giving away the secret of the hidden camera. Only problem is you can only really use them when it’s sunny.

Overall spy sunglasses are brilliant products. The space that the framework provides allows good quality camera to be installed with other good quality components. While not offering the same versatility as a spy pen they are defiantly a fun alternative device.

Clock Cameras (And other stationary devices)

One of the least obvious places to ever hide a camera, people began hiding chunky high quality cameras within wall-mounted clocks and other objects. Often placed in devices high up in the room to ensure a good view of the whole room, they have provided full room security for years.

The offer no versatility, they are literally a one trick pony, but what a trick. If you’re a hidden camera hound like myself you certainly would be lost without one of these variations in your collection.

Pre-disguised Hidden Cameras

Some how we have found ourselves coming full loop round back to the spy pen. We shall make an effort not to keep mentioning it as there are other devices this concept has been used to create, most often common day-to-day items.

We’ve come across several really strange disguises in our time. The most common of these seem to be tie clips, remote controls, and chewing gum packets.  All offer roughly the same quality of recording as each other.

The problem we have with these is that they are limited to how you can use them. A good piece of spy equipment should be versatile and always comfortable in its surroundings. The devices are not useable everywhere you go, so failing miserably we find ourselves coming back to the spy pen and stamping it with out recommendation.

A spy pen isn’t the only hidden spy camera out there, Jason Bosworth attempts to inform you of some of the other hidden devices available to you today.

Understanding Home Siding Alternatives

Siding is the home’s outer layer, but it is much more than aesthetic dressing. Siding is the first defense against heat, cold, moisture, and even insects that bombard the home day to day. As such, choosing and installing or replacing siding is an important home improvement decision.

Understanding the different forms of siding and their various advantages and drawbacks is the first step in making sure your home renovation is effective.

Siding can take many forms, but in all cases it serves as a protective layer and aesthetic covering. In both ways it has a significant impact on the durability and economic value of the home. Siding can be composed of boards attached in vertical or horizontal arrangements. Alternatively, it can be an arrangement of shingles. Further still, it can be installed as a “sheet.” Siding can come in wood, metal, plastic, concrete, or other composite materials.

The most common form of siding consists of long boards stacked in overlapping fashion up the outer wall of the house. Such a design is easy to install and is effective in directing water away from walls. This type of siding comes in wood, vinyl, and new composite forms of insulated plastic.

Wood siding can be one of the most expensive, but also one of the most aesthetically pleasing and durable, forms of siding. Wood needs to be maintained and monitored for signs of warping and rotting. Installation of wood siding demands more labor and more technical expertise than other materials, and thus can be expensive to install, beyond the cost of materials. If you do decide to go with wood, go with good wood. Redwood and cedar are naturally weather resistant and thus can reduce the amount of maintenance, but all wood will need to be periodically treated due to the continuous beating it takes from the elements, and to avoid destructive infestations of termites and other wood-loving insects.

A less vulnerable alternative to wood siding is vinyl, which, with the extent of improvements in materials and manufacturing, can be purchased in styles that look almost identical to wood products. It will cost less, is more easily installed, and will require less maintenance over its life than would a wood product. Vinyl siding also comes in a wider variety of colors, finishes, and sizes than wood. Some higher-quality vinyl has a thick core, greater resemblance to natural wood, and insulating properties that can save money on utility bills.

A new form of siding known as insulated siding may be a better choice than either wood or vinyl. This type of siding has a layer of foam custom-fitted to the side that attaches to the house, allowing for a better fit and more effective insulation. Insulated siding typically comes Energy Star certified, which means it has been approved by U.S. government agencies as compliant with energy efficient standards and, while it may cost more than non-certified products, can be expected to provide significant savings over the life of the product.
