Becoming a plumber is easy, but becoming a good plumber is something else. A plumbing course had 3 levels. There is NVQ level 1 where you learn all of the basics of plumbing such as the plumbing tools and materials, then there level 2 where you learn about the different types of systems for central heating and the different types of water systems for drinking and washing in. Plumbing is getting more and more technical as there many new type of systems now.
For instants most plumbing system was all gravity with just the two water tanks in the loft, but now there are a few called sealed systems or what is also called unvented systems which is pressurised from the mains water which runs directly from the road allowing good pressure on all the hot and cold water taps.
NVQ level 3 is more about three port valves, pumps and the electrical side of things. You need to have a NVQ 2 to be qualified but a NVQ level 3 will give you the advanced training that you need.
St Albans collage also does the gas safe course which is very advanced. It is recommended if you can find a plumber in St Albans who can help and give you the experience you need. St Albans college has a fantastic learning workshop facility.
They have bays where you plumb in different appliances. From bathroom suites to kitchen sinks. Pipe bending and soldering copper pipe fittings. They have stopped doing the lead flashing now as it is now a roofers job. They recommend good students out to local plumbers in St Albans for free to help them get the experience they need to get qualified quicker.
To learn the basics and to be able to go out there on your own you need three years experience. It will take about that long to start collecting the tools you need as well. Start off by doing smaller jobs such as changing a tap washer and a set of taps. Then you will natural move onto the bigger jobs such a changing toilets and radiators. If you don’t feel up to working on your own then find a company will you will be happy to work for. But the most important thing to learn when working with water is to be able to get out of trouble fast because water does damage fast.
St Albans Plumbers are happy with the students and the skills they have learnt from the college as it has a high level of quality. Your never to young or old to learn as it teaches from all ages. Good luck of becoming a plumber
